Had Not the God of My Father

by | Jun 19, 2010

“Had not the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, been with me, it is certain thou wouldest have sent me away now empty. God has looked upon my affliction and the labor of my hands, and has judged last night.” Genesis 31 v42
These were the words of Jacob to Laban his Uncle who had manipulated and tried several times to outsmart him in their relationship. Let me paraphrase this verse like this “the True, Great and Faithful God of my grand father Abraham and the personal and reverent fear of that same God that my own Father Isaac had which also has been transferred to me has intervened on my behalf and that is why you can not carry out your wicked plans on me “
In the above passage we can see that Father Abraham had introduced God Almighty to Isaac and Isaac had in turn introduced this to his own son Jacob who can now testify of God’s miraculous intervention in his life. But that is not all; Jacob also feared and respected his own father Isaac. My question to you today is do you really know this true God of Abraham or which God has your own father introduced to you? .You may want to say your own father did not know the true God hence it has been difficult to know this true God. The Bible says in Hebrews 1v1-2” In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.” Today again you are being told that accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior is the only way to this great and true God who always intervene on behalf of HIS own.
We also see that Jacob has a personal reverent fear of his own father which made him closer to the Almighty God that miraculously rescued him from destruction. Do you fear and respect your own father? Will the fear, honor and respect you have for your father accrue some positives things for you in the sight of the Almighty God? The Bible commands you to honor and respect your parents. Ephesians 6 v2 “Honor your father and mother”–which is the first commandment with a promise”
If your response is that your parents did not deserve this or did not bring you up the Bible way how are you today bringing up your own biological children or the children under your influence ?Do your own children know your God or which God have you introduced to them ? Do your own children fear and respect you like Jacob did and spoke about. God came through for Jacob and his name was changed to Israel and he is a blessing today because he knew the true God, feared and respected his own father.
In 2 Kings 2v12” Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel! And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them apart.” In the critical historic and spiritual moment of transference of double portion of power, Elisha drew on his father relationship with his master to bring the manifestation to pass. Do you truly have a spiritual father that you can connect with in your moment of need?
Can you boldly talk about God as your father? Do you respect and fear HIM as a father? Happy Father’s Day
